Light control module is installed in the right front foot well which can be accessed only by removing the right front sill cover and kick panel and lifting the carpet behind the right kick panel. This module controls exterior lighting and processes driver information display data and functions as a bus system to the rest of the modules. CC1 functions include measurement of Check Control inputs and output, operation and control of vehicle external lights, dimming signals of instruments panels and indicators for high beam, turn and fog indicators. The module houses transistor power output stages for operating exterior lights so that there are no necessary lighting fuses or relays. It gets input requests of low intensity lighting from switches and other input data from other control modules to switch power output stages ON to turn on the lamps. Other modules that interact with it are the instrument cluster for the illumination of indicators, the multiple restraint system module for the alarm on a crash situation, and adaptive transmission control for the backup lamp. The LCM also supervises exterior bulbs where it will send signals that a bulb is off if the value it detects is above or below the set level. For safety it has emergency functions and various lights is operable even if LCM fails, these includes side marker lights, tail lamps, low beam head lamps, stop lamps and turn signal lamps. When replacing the module, it is necessary to code the new unit with the help of the BMW service tool.

The BMW X5 Light Control Module serves as the electronic hub of an entire system of exterior and interior lamps. It turns what would otherwise be a pretty basic switch-and-bulb setup into a sophisticated network that can switch, dim, and react automatically. Nested behind the dash, the Light Control Module ties together power feeds, switches, relays, and sensors so a tiny control signal safely commands high-current headlights, taillights, turn signals, and cabin lights. Early X5 versions had a first style Light Control Module that dealt with basic relay-operated on or off type applications. Later models were fitted with an updated Light Control Module, which also reads sensor input for automatic headlight operation and soft interior dimming. Regardless of generation, the Light Control Module has one approach. It collects the inputs via multi-pin connectors, processes them, then passes them to each circuit with the precise voltage, which eliminates the unwieldy manual wiring. Failure manifests itself in dead lamps or flickering signs. To replace them, follow an eight-step procedure that includes locking the unit in place with 8-32 screws, matching white and gray connectors, installing a toggle switch, and checking they still work with the engine running.
