As for the parking brake, this is operated by two Bowden cables, and each can be replaced on its own. To reach the base of the parking brake handle work inside the car and trim the center console storage tray and centre armrest if required. Remove the parking brake cable lock nuts at the base of the handle using a deep 10 mm socket type BMW special tool 34 1 030. Lift the rear of the car and take out the total exhaust system and then carry on with the center tunnel heat shield. Release the parking brake cable from the body guide tube and the two routing brackets paying attention to the direction of the cable for easy reassembly. Pull the expander up in order to release the parking brake lever and spring and then take out the expander. Slightly lift the new cable under the body and fix it to the brackets on the car's framework. The rest of the installation process is done in reverse order to the removal and the parking brake should be checked for the correct setting.
