Many of the mirror components are separately available from an authorized BMW dealer, including the glass and outside plastic housing. XS models offered two types of outside mirrors, standard (driver's side), and automatic dip (automatic curb monitor, passenger side). To activate the passenger side exterior mirror tilt function, move the mirror adjustment switch to the DRIVER'S MIRROR position. When the transmission is placed in REVERSE, the passenger side mirror tilts downward to help the drive monitor the area directly adjacent to the car during parking(curbs, etc.). To deactivate this feature, set the mirror adjustment switch to the passenger's mirror position. Removing and installing the outside mirror glass can be tricky due to the adhesive on the rear of the glass. Extra force may be required to free it from the mounting base. For added protection, cover glass completely with masking tape or wear hand protection when removing. Make sure mirror glass is at or above room temperature before removing. Otherwise, small plastic parts or glass may break. Tilt mirror housing out. With mirror glass squarely positioned in housing frame, push bottom of glass fully into housing. Insert plastic wedge under center of glass and gently pry glass up until glass disengages from retaining clips. Lift glass out and disconnect mirror heater wires from back of mirror glass. Store mirror glass safely. When installing, reattach mirror heater wires. Position mirror glass in housing while aligning plastic retainers. Carefully lever top center of glass down to engage retaining clips. Removing and installing the outside mirror housing involves removing the door trim panel. Carefully peel back window frame /speaker trim and set to one side. Remove speaker rubber insulation. Remove speaker and disconnect connectors. Follow mirror electrical harnesses to door and disconnect. If necessary, carefully cut wire ties and remove tape around wiring. While supporting mirror, remove three mounting fasteners. Lower mounting bolt is covered by a rubber cap. Lift mirror to remove from door. Feed mirror electrical harnesses through opening to remove. Installation is reverse of removal. Check mirror function before reinstalling door panel trim.
