BMW Z3 Intake Manifold Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to disconnect, remove, and install the intake manifold on BMW Z3?
A: Disconnect the negative battery cable on E30 models with the S14 engine, remove cap nuts at the outer ends of the 4 throttle necks, then the mounting nuts underneath. After ensuring the engine has cooled off, loosen the hose clamps for the air intake lines and the fuel lines, collect fuel in a metal container. Disconnect the throttle cable, intake manifold, cut off the crankcase ventilation hose, and replace it. Remove the throttle valve switch plug, injector plug plate, fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose, injector pipe, throttle necks, and separate the assemblies. Inspect the O-rings in the connecting pipe, and reverse the removal procedure to install. Use a new throttle linkage self-locking nut and a new crankcase ventilation hose. Torque the attaching nuts to the specified limits and adjust the throttle cable. For the M20 engine, disconnect the battery ground cable, drain the cooling system, remove the air flow sensor, vacuum hoses, and electrical plugs. Remove the intake manifold, install it on new gaskets, reconnect all lines and electrical connections, fill the cooling system with coolant, and connect the negative battery terminal. For the M42 engine, follow the outlined procedure for disconnection, removal, and installation. Ensure to replace gaskets, inspect O-rings, and check for fluid or vacuum leaks after installation. For E36 models with 4-cylinder engines, ensure to label all cables, electrical connectors, fuel, coolant, and breather hoses. Relieve the fuel system pressure, disconnect the negative battery cable, drain the coolant, remove the upper air filter housing, mass air flow sensor, intake duct, accelerator cables, electrical connectors, hoses, and intake manifold. Cover the open intake ports, reinstall in reverse order, and replace all intake manifold gaskets. For 6-cylinder engines, relieve the fuel system pressure, disconnect the negative battery cable, drain the coolant, remove the throttle cable cover, vacuum fitting, manifold covers, ignition coil wire harness, cylinder head vent hose, air temperature sensor plug, coolant hoses, throttle valve switch connector, and intake manifold. Install the manifold onto the engine, tighten the bolts, and check for fluid leaks after installation.
