BMW Z3 Steering Knuckle

The BMW Z3 Steering Knuckle is the vital connection that allows each of the front wheels to pivot when turning and to roll up and down over bumps, keeping handling sharp and predictable. The Steering Knuckle serves as a rigid connection point for the upper and lower control arms or strut and lower arm, anchoring the tie-rod end and hosting the spindle or hub that accepts the wheel. In early BMW Z3 roadster units, the spindle is designed with a typical rear-wheel-drive configuration, allowing the tapered-bearing hub to slide onto it. Later BMW Z3 units feature a bolt-on hub with sealed bearings that are bolted to the Steering Knuckle, making replacement easier and reducing maintenance. This Steering Knuckle also saves weight without losing strength. No matter which version you are referring to, this component works like a kingpin and allows for vertical movement after the ball joints, which is a modern arrangement, and thus, no heavy kingpins like the old designs. Steering Knuckle replacement is not common but may be required due to collision damage or distortion of the ball-joint tapers to maintain safe geometry. By carefully examining the stud bores and spindle threads, the iconic BMW performance can be preserved, and Z3 enthusiasts can stay confident on every curve.

  • Q: How to remove and replace the steering knuckle and spindle assembly on BMW Z3?
    A:
Loosen the lug bolts 1/8 turn. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the tire/wheel assembly. Remove the brake and bracket assembly. Remove the front hub as outlined. If just replacing the steering knuckle, the brake rotor can remain attached to the hub. Remove the Control Arm from the spindle. Remove the ABS sensor fastener and sensor without disconnecting and place aside. Remove the tie rod end. Remove the spindle from the strut assembly. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
