How to remove and install the air filter box on the BMW Z4?

BMW Z4 Air Filter Box

The BMW Z4 Air Filter Box protects the air of the roadster engine by means of clean air flowing to the engine. Seated ahead of the intake manifold, this Air Filter Box creates a sealed chamber around the paper element such that all of the 10,000 gallons of air pulled in for each gallon of fuel has to go through the filter, carrying away dust, sand, leaves, and metal specks before they can scar pistons or plug up oil passages. When cruising or accelerating, the box channels the airflow with no turbulence that can lower performance. Over the course of several generations, the Air Filter Box maintained the same basic mission, but the shape of the housing grew and the duct routing changed to accommodate both refreshed bodywork and updated intake configurations in early Z4 editions where the filter box housing was simply rectangular with a more contoured shape tucked tighter within the engine bay of later Z4 models. Regardless of what styling tweaks may be made, each Air Filter Box retains rugged plastic walls and tight gaskets to protect the filter from splash and debris, and quick-release clips allow owners to switch filters easily while keeping their BMW powerplants healthy and prolonging oil life.
