Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Move the steering column down as far as it will go and extend it completely. Loosen and remove the two retaining Torx screws from the top of the instrument cluster, then carefully pull the top of the cluster from the dash. Lift up the retaining clips, disconnect the wiring connectors, and remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring the instrument cluster wiring is correctly reconnected and securely held in position by any retaining clips. Upon completion, reconnect the battery and check the operation of the cluster warning lights to ensure they are functioning correctly. If the instrument cluster has been replaced, the new unit must be coded to match the vehicle, which can only be carried out by a BMW dealer or suitably-equipped specialist.
