  Q: How to remove and install a thermostat and coolant in a BMW Z4?

  A: Non-toxic coolant is available at most auto parts stores. Although the coolant is non-toxic, proper disposal is still required. A new thermostat sealing ring and (where fitted) housing gasket/seal will be required on installation. To remove the thermostat, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Drain the cooling system. Where applicable, to improve access to the thermostat housing, remove the cooling fan and viscous coupling. Pry out the locking wire clips and disconnect the coolant hose(s) from the thermostat housing on the front of the cylinder head/timing chain cover (as applicable). Disconnect the electrical connector from the thermostat housing. Unscrew the retaining bolts and remove the thermostat housing. Recover the housing gasket/seal. It will be necessary to unbolt the engine lifting bracket to allow the housing to be removed. Note that the thermostat is integral with the housing. Recover the sealing ring. Installation is the reverse of removal, bearing in mind the following points. Replace the thermostat housing O-ring seal. Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to the torque. Reinstall the cooling fan. On completion, refill the cooling system.
