To remove the tie rod end, start by applying the parking brake and raising the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the front wheel and make a mark on the tie rod to measure the distance from the mark to the center of the tie rod end. Unscrew the tie rod end clamp bolt and discard it. Remove the nut securing the tie rod end to the steering knuckle and release the ball joint by tapping the end of the shank with a soft faced hammer. Unscrew the tie rod end from the tie rod, counting the exact number of turns. Clean the tie rod end and threads, replacing it if necessary. To install the tie rod end, screw it onto the tie rod by the noted number of turns. Install the tie rod end to the steering knuckle with a new retaining nut and tighten it to the specified torque. Insert the new tie rod end clamp bolt and tighten it to the specified torque. Finally, install the wheel, lower the vehicle, and tighten the wheel bolts to the specified torque. It is recommended to check the front wheel alignment and steering angle sensor calibration using BMW diagnostic equipment.
