Raise the car and remove the front wheel. The procedure to remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle is similar to removing the front strut assembly, with the strut remaining mounted to the body. With the steering knuckle supported by a floor jack, remove the brake line holder and the fastener from the steering knuckle. Lower the floor jack and slide the steering knuckle off the strut assembly. If necessary, use BMW special tool 31 2 230 to spread the steering knuckle pinch collar. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to face the bolt head of the steering knuckle pinch bolt in the direction of travel, replace self-locking fasteners with new ones, confirm that the steering knuckle contacts the stop on the strut, and tighten bonded rubber fasteners to the final torque specification with the car on the ground and loaded. Bounce the suspension a few times before final tightening.
