For the purpose of the removal and installation of the coolant pump and the N52 engine, the below are the procedures; In the engines of the BMW models, the coolant pump requires a removal of the splash shield which is located below the engine. Empty the coolant out of the cooling system, and protect the alternator from corrosive action of the coolant. Finally, the coolant thermostat shall be unplugged, the hose clamps be unscrewed and the coolant hose be separated from the back of the pump. Unscrew the electrical connector, after that unbolt the pump and take it off from the side of the engine. If the coolant pump is to be re-used, it has to be refilled with a 50/50 solution of anti-freeze and distilled water the moment it is removed and the holes have to be covered to prevent anything. The process of installation is just the opposite to the process of removal and while reconstructing, care is taken to replace all aluminum fasteners and it is advised not to use steel fasteners which can result in electrochemical corrosion. Replace the thermostat with a new one, replace the refrigerant and evacuate the system and finally look for leaks.

The M54 engine incorporates a normally geared centrifugal water pump located at the front that circulates the coolant through the system once when the engine is under operation. However, the N52 engine has positioned an electrical water pump at the right side of the engine head to enhance effectiveness and flexibility on heating and cooling of the engine because it has the aptitude to run independently with the engine. In cold starts, a low rate of coolant circulation is employed to speed up warm up of the engine as against the normal high rate or circulation including circulation with the engine off, thus optimizing on engine fuel consumption and durability to failure. The pump is regulated by the DME who monitors load factor, engine operating range and a number of temperature sensors, for controlling both the coolant pump and its speed. Further, the electric coolant pump has a function of self-diagnostics: impeller speed deviation, the presence of a foreign object, a deviation of coolant-water ratio, the presence of air in a cooling system can be noted and stored.

To remove and install the coolant pump, on m54 engine first, remove the cooling fan and cowl. Then, turn off the engine and, using a recovery tank, remove the coolant and cover the generator with it not to get damaged by the coolant. To do this, turn the coolant pump pulley slightly counterclockwise to Loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts without removing them Then remove the alternator drive belt and encode the belt direction. Out of the coolant pump pulley bolts and take off the pulley from the pump as well. Removing the coolant pump fasteners; however, tightening two M6 screws into the tapped bores of the pump and keeping them equal until it comes out from the timing chain cover. While installing, make sure that the sealing O-ring and gaskets are put back in, lubricate the O-ring before installation, refill the cooling system and check for any leaks and the last but not the least, fill in the cooling system and bleed it.
