To perform the removal and installation of E30 and E36 models, certain tools are required including a support for the transmission, BMW Tool No.24 O 120 and 00 2 020 or equivalent, and a tool for tightening the driveshaft locking ring, BMW Tool No. 26 1 040 or equivalent. The process involves disconnecting the battery ground cable, loosening the throttle cable adjusting nuts, disconnecting the exhaust system, removing the transfer case (for 325iX models), draining the transmission oil, supporting the transmission, separating the torque converter housing, disconnecting the front driveshaft (for 325iX models), removing various bolts and sensors, supporting the transmission with a jack, disconnecting the transmission shift rod, unscrewing the driveshaft spline locking ring, lowering the transmission, removing all bolts attaching the transmission to the engine, removing the small grill from the bottom of the transmission, and pressing the converter off with a large prybar. To install, the transmission is positioned under the vehicle, the converter is fully installed onto the transmission, the lock-ring is tightened, the self-locking nuts on the driveshaft flexible joint are replaced, the center mount is installed with preload, the bayonet type electrical connector is reconnected, the speed and reference mark sensors are reinstalled, the crossmember mounting bolts are torqued, the transmission oil cooler connections are checked, the throttle cables are adjusted, and various other steps are followed. For E36 models, additional steps include marking and removing the crossmember under the driveshaft, disconnecting the driveshaft from the output flange, disconnecting the shifter cable and various connectors, removing the torque converter mounting bolts, placing a transmission jack under the transmission, disconnecting the oxygen sensor cable, removing the transmission crossmember, and removing the transmission with the torque converter. To install, the condition of the dowel sleeves and flexplate is checked, the torque converter and flexplate are aligned, the transmission is bolted to the engine, the torque converter bolts are torqued, the oil cooler lines are installed, the crossmember and wiring connections are installed, the shifter cable is connected and adjusted, the driveshaft is installed, the center bearing is preloaded, the spline locking ring is torqued, the crossmember is installed, the exhaust system and splash guards are installed, the transmission is filled with fluid, and the negative battery terminal is connected.
