The Engine Control Module (ECM) is the computer control module. The engine control module uses the Mass Air Flow to take care of fuel delivery and ignition time of the vehicle's engine. The ECM boosts the fuel mixture by adjusting the opening and closing time of the fuel injectors and when removing the ECM, let the E30 and E36 models reach normal temperature before you change the ECM to prevent poor performance.

The Ignition module is incorporated into the DME control unit. For 814 and M20 Engines, if possible, bring the engine to operating temperature prior to replacing the control unit. Then, turn the Ignition switch OFF. Open the glove compartment and remove the pins from the straps so the door drops down. Remove the upper trim piece to access the DME unit. Push the plug retainer back and remove the plug. Remove the 4 bolts and remove the DME unit. To install, install the DME unit and the 4 bolts. Install the plug onto the DME unit and snap the retainer into place. Replace the trim and the glove compartment door.
