    Q:
How do you properly remove and install a steering rack on BMW X5? Posted by Customer
    A:
Drain the power steering fluid reservoir using a clean syringe and do not reuse the fluid. Raise the front of the car and remove the front wheels, then take off the splash shield and front end reinforcement underneath the engine. Install an engine support brace across the engine bay and raise the engine slightly to relieve the load on the engine mounts. While working underneath the engine, remove the upper nuts from the right and left engine mounts. Detach the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. At the left strut tower, remove the heater valve mounting bolts and push the heater valve and hoses aside to access the steering spindle double universal joint. Remove the upper pinch bolt of the double universal joint and disengage it from the upper steering spindle. Unbolt the Rack And Pinions mounting Torx fasteners while counterholding the nuts above the rack and discard the fasteners. Support the front subframe with a block of wood placed on a transmission jack, then remove the subframe mounting bolts from both sides. Carefully lower the subframe to access the power steering fluid lines at the Rack And Pinions, ensuring not to damage the lines and keeping it adequately supported. If necessary, remove the heat shield from the power steering Rack And Pinions and take out the fluid line banjo bolts, being prepared to catch any dripping fluid. If needed, detach the fluid lines and bracket from the Rack And Pinions and front subframe, then slide the Rack And Pinions to the left side for removal, ensuring no fluid lines or electrical harnesses are snagged. For installation, reverse the removal process while ensuring all thread bores, bolts, nuts, splines, and mating surfaces are clean, replacing the banjo bolt sealing O-rings without overtorquing the bolts. Ensure the power steering fluid lines are routed without tension and with sufficient spacing to nearby components, use new Rack And Pinions mounting bolts tightened in two stages, and replace the steering spindle double universal joint pinch bolt(s) with new self-locking fasteners where applicable. Rotate the steering wheel to check that the steering spindle and double universal joint do not contact the vehicle chassis or front subframe, adjusting as necessary. After reassembling the steering and front suspension, fill and bleed the power steering system, check for leaks, have the car professionally aligned, and carry out the steering angle sensor adjustment using a BMW scan tool.
