It is possible to pull the flywheel or driveplate with the engine still in the car if the transmission unit is first pulled out. Starting your work, you should begin by detaching the clutch assembly for the manual transmission. On the next step, indicate the relation of the flywheel or the driveplate to the crankshaft rear flange. Lift the starter ring gear by engaging it with a heavy screwdriver or a cold chisel and then withdraw the securing bolts. Some flywheels have eight securing bolts, which are to be disposed off and then rebolted; the six-bolt ones need the lockplate to be replaced.

After screwing the bolts in finger-tight, jam the starter ring gear.

If the machined face of the flywheel is scored or shows surface cracks, it should be surface ground. However, the thickness of the driven plate contact area of the flywheel must never be reduced below 0.535 in (13.6 mm).
