To check the viscous coupling, place a protective cloth over the pressure plate and rotate it in a clockwise direction until the flywheel barely begins to move. Match mark the pressure plate and the outer body of the flywheel. Then, rotate the pressure plate in a counterclockwise direction until the flywheel barely begins to move and match mark it again. The pressure plate should be able to be moved between the two match marks without excessive force or looseness.

Using new fasteners coated with a suitable locking agent, tighten and torque in a three-step crisscross pattern. The torque values vary depending on the engine type and transmission. For example, S14/M20 M12 fasteners: 82-94 ft. lbs. (113-130 Nm), M42/M44 micro encapsulated fasteners: 88.5 ft. lbs. (120 Nm), all engines with automatic transmission, micro-encapsulated fasteners: 88.5 ft. lbs. (120 Nm), all others: micro-encapsulated fasteners: 77.4 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
