Drain the fuel from the tank by unscrewing the drain plug or syphoning it out with tubing, then disconnect the lead from the battery negative terminal. Remove the floor panel from the luggage boot and disconnect the leads from the tank transmitter unit, followed by disconnecting the hose from the pipe on the transmitter unit, noting that fuel injection models have two hoses connected. Release the clip at the base of the filler tube and push the rubber sleeve upwards, then remove the fuel tank securing bolts and lift the tank upwards from its mounting. To clean the tank of sediment, shake it vigorously with two or three changes of paraffin and wash it out with clean fuel, ensuring to remove the transmitter unit first using two crossed screwdrivers in the rim cut-outs. For any leaks, make only temporary repairs with fibreglass or similar material, as permanent repairs by soldering or welding should be left to professionals due to explosion risks if the tank is not purged of fumes by steam cleaning. Installation is a reversal of removal, but before inserting the transmitter unit, clean the filter gauze and renew the rubber sealing ring.
