    Q:
How to disconnect and remove the intake manifold in six cylinder engine on BMW X5? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the battery negative cable in the cargo compartment and always make sure to read the battery disconnection cautions before doing it. In the engine compartment, first take out the venting micro filter and the plenum cover and then snap off the plenum seal and separate the plenum bulk head also. Remove the live terminal B+ at the plenum cover from the left and then pull the upper engine covers off. While above the engine remove the B+ lead bracket, resonance valve electrical connector, oxygen sensor connectors, electrical connector for intake air temperature sensor, manifold vacuum line and mark the oxygen sensor connectors for reassembly. Situated at the left side of the cylinder head, disconnect the engine vent hose from the cylinder head cover, squeezing the spring clips besides, pull the VANOS solenoid connector loose. The fuel injector electrical connectors have to be disconnected from the injectors by pulling one corner of the wire lock clip on each injector's connector with a small screwdriver, then by releasing the two main harness hold-down connectors and lifting the fuel injector harness entirely. On the left-hand side and below the intake manifold you need to disconnect at the fuel tank venting valve, then remove the hose from the quick disconnect fitting, and finally unbolt and remove the valve from the manifold. Loosen the nut of the electrical connector of the idle speed control valve and then remove the throttle housing. Twist of the Schrader valve cap on the fuel rail, relief from pressure by unscrewing the fuel tank cap and using a short blast a compressed air to force fuel back into the tank. At the rear of the manifold to sever the fuel supply line from the fuel rail use a special tool to press the locking clip located in the end the of the fuel line fitting. Below the vehicle, you require loosening of the lower intake manifold support mounting bolt which is close to the left engine mount after which you loosen the knock sensor connector that is usually fixed at the base of the manifold and finally remove the manifold lower support nuts and the intake manifold mounting nuts. Gently take off the intake manifold from the cylinder head being over watchful not to entangle any of the electrical connection or hoses. The reinstallation of the intake manifold is in a sense the inverse of the removal with new fuel injector seals and with careful examination of the condition of the intake manifold gaskets and the rubber sealing at the throttle house and the idle speed control valve as well as the O-ring seal between the mass air flow sensor and the air filter housing; the O-ring is coated with assembly fluids in preparation for reassembly. On reconnecting the throttle assembly harness connector, the arrow depicted on the connector should merge with that on the plug when tightened.

    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the intake manifold while addressing potential leaks and ensuring proper engine performance in V8 engine on BMW X5? Posted by Customer
    A:
Defective intake manifold gaskets, leakage in other vacuum related connections, can cause driveability problems when idling while at the same time setting diagnostic trouble codes or the malfunction indicator light. Due to the potential of the existence of fuel in the base of the intake manifold, one should study the fuel system warnings when preparing for the removal of the intake manifold of the vehicle. First of all, remove the negative terminal of the battery observing the precautions stated concerning battery isolation. In the engine compartment plenum chamber, some of the sub-assemblies which can be removed include the ventilation microfilter, plenum cover, plenum seal, and plenum bulkhead. After that, remove the upper engine cover. Pop off the ignition coil cover trim caps, take out the fasteners and extricate the ignition covers from the coils. Remove the connectors and grounding wires of the ignition coil, air filter housing and ducts. Loosen the battery positive terminal wire and pull it away from the support and leave it aside. During the work on or above the intake manifold, it has to be disconnected the several vacuum hoses including the secondary air injection solenoids, knock sensor, camshaft sensor, and several other connectors, if any. Take off the left and right engine wire duct mounting nut and give a disconnect fo the fuel injector electrical connectors. Raise the left side engine wire duct and fold it to the right side, and both of electrical ducts should be located far from the intake manifold. If required, remove the connectors of the engine oil level sensor and crankshaft sensor. Slightly open the cap of the fuel tank, and then unfasten the fuel supply line of the rail with the help of a wrench and cover the fuel lines. In the back side of the intake manifold, disconnect the crank case breathers hose and the brake booster vacuum hose, and unbolt the oil separator. Last but not least, you should unbolt the intake manifold and then raise the manifold and the fuel rail off the engine being as careful as possible not to entangle any hoses or harnesses. After the reinstallation of the manifold, check the intake manifold insulators and gasket and replace them if they are worn out, and then clean the gasket flanges. Check that the manifold's multiple gaskets are correctly in place, position the manifold on the top of the cylinder head, and screw two of the mounting nuts loosely, before tightening all the remaining nuts in a cross shape from the inner ones.

    Q:
How do you remove the exhaust manifold for the 2005 BMW Z4? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the exhaust manifold, follow similar steps to remove the heater/ventilation inlet air ducting. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jackstands, remove the engine splash shield and the front axle reinforcement plate/bar bolts. Attach an engine hoist or support fixture to the lifting eye at the front of the cylinder head to take the weight off the engine. Underneath the vehicle, remove the right-hand engine mounting with the support arm. Remove the plastic cover over the injectors by prying out plastic caps and removing screws. Trace back the wiring from the oxygen sensor and remove the nuts/bolts to separate the exhaust pipe from the manifold. Use the engine hoist to raise the engine slightly, then remove the front exhaust manifold and rear exhaust manifold while taking care not to damage the oxygen sensors. Discard the gaskets. For installation, apply anti-seize high-temperature grease to the manifold studs, replace the manifold gaskets, and tighten the manifold nuts to the specified torque. Tighten the front axle reinforcement plate bolts to the specified torque as well.
