When working with 318 and M3 models, first loosen the hose clamp at the air flow meter and unplug the hose. First, disconnect the electrical connections running to the air flow meter by turning its outer ring and pulling it off. Next, remove the four clips that hold the upper air filter housing to the lower compartment, and lift the upper housing out of the engine area. Take out the air filter fabric and wash the lower air filter box clean of any dust or dirt it trapped, placing it back into the car the way you put it in. When converting your E36's 4-cylinder engine, make sure to push the seal completely into its groove in the housing before putting on the top cover. After removing the retaining clips from the upper air filter chamber, lift it off to take out the filter, before cleaning the lower housing area. Installation follows the reverse of removal. For 6-cylinder engines, remove the two L-shaped clips, lift the filler frame gently up away from top housing, and take out the air filter attached to the frame. Brush off dirt from the air filler housing, put the new filter onto the carrier frame facing the right way, marked by arrows, and put everything back in its place.
