    Q:
How to deactivate the air suspension spring in the repair group on BMW X5? Posted by Customer
    A:
Many of the procedures in this repair group require deactivation of the air suspension springs. To deactivate air suspension springs, raise the vehicle and safely support it. Remove the ignition key and pull the fuse for the air compressor, which is F87 located in the cargo compartment fuse and relay panel behind the right side cargo compartment trim. Replace the fuse when the work is completed and before lowering the vehicle.

    Q:
What are the steps involved in handling and installing an air suspension spring on the BMW X5? Posted by Customer
    A:
It is made of a flexible rubber which forms a sealed chamber into which is pumped compressed air supplied by an electric compressor and regulated electronically to alter the stiffness in relation to the load being carried by the vehicle. Several things have to be understood: if the vehicle is placed on the wheels or driven with a deflated air suspension spring, the later is permanently damaged. Extreme cleanliness during the handling of these air connections should be adhered to since even the smallest particle of dirt causes system leakage. First of all, unlock the air suspension spring and follow by the removal of the rear wheels. In the cargo compartment, delete such parts as the cargo floor and trim panels; it is also necessary to remove the fasteners in the plastic floor supports and the supports for them. On the air suspension spring reservoir, turning the air supply connection gradually anticlockwise to relieve air pressure and waiting for one or two minutes for pressure to reduce before totally removing the air supply pipe. Do not kink, twist or crush the lines for the EHC system. Next, unscrew the protective rubber cap on the top of the air suspension spring, pull down the quick coupler, at the same time putting pressure on the ring to release it and disconnect the air pipe by pulling it up and plugging the holes to avoid dirt penetration. Pull the air suspension spring mounting claw and then, from the rear suspension side, the locking claw on the swing arm side then the air suspension spring can be set off. Check the roll fold of the air suspension spring and replace it only if it has not worn out and has been formed in proper manner. For installation, turn the sealing O-rings located at the air suspension spring inlet region and in case they are damaged, replace them with new ones; however, do not grease them; finally, replace the protective plug. Replace the spring and fix the upper mounting clips together with the locating lug at the bottom of the spring that must fit in the recess of the swing arm before the reinstallation of the lower locking clip. The connections on the air lines should now be connected back with some notable sound coming from the quick release lines, and the whole process exploited again in a backward fashion to disassembly, including the activation as well as the filling of the air suspension system.
