Front and rear brake pad replacement procedures are similar; replace pads in sets, raise car and support safely, and remove wheels; remove the brake pad wear sensor from the left side of the car, using a suitable punch drive out retaining pins, remove brake pad retaining springs (C), and slide brake pads (D) up and out of the caliper to remove; use special tool 34 1 050 or equivalent to compress brake caliper pistons. Caution, pressing caliper pistons in may cause brake fluid reservoir to overflow, so use a clean syringe to first remove some fluid from the reservoir; check dust boots for damage and replace if needed; clean contact surfaces of pistons with brake cleaner and apply a thin coat of BMW anti-squeal compound, clean brake pad guide surfaces with brake cleaner and apply a thin coat of BMW anti-squeal compound; before installing brake pads, apply a thin coat of BMW anti-squeal compound to contact areas A and B; complete installation in reverse of removal; top off brake fluid to the MAX marking; before driving, pump the brake pedal several times so the brake pads contact the rotors and check that the brake fluid level is correct, topping off if necessary; with doors closed, turn ignition on to the accessory position for at least 30 seconds to clear fault codes and turn the brake pad warning light off, and if the light remains on, reset the condition-based service (CBS) system using maintenance procedure 020.
