Turn off the ignition switch and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable, covering the terminal to prevent accidental contact. Prior to disconnecting battery, make a note of the battery disconnection cautions. You must extract the upper and lower cabin air microfilter housings and then also the engine air filter housing and ducts, the ignition coil cover and the intake manifold. Do not disconnect fuel lines or injectors. The fastener is removed and the B+ cable is detached from the solenoid. The wire clip is pressed in to release the solenoid wire connector. Remove the starter mounting bolts to remove the starter motor. Prior to installing a new starter, rotate the engine and inspect the flywheel or torque plate gear teeth through the starter hole. Replace any damaged components. Fix the starter back into place and reconnect the electrical connections. For vehicles with the auto start-stop system, use a BMW scan tool to reset the starter counter.
