Prior to disconnecting the battery, read the battery disconnection cautions in 001 Warnings and Cautions; raise the front of the car and remove the front wheels, remove the splash shield from under the engine, detach the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles, for AWD remove the front suspension reinforcement plate, if necessary remove the shield from the Rack and Pinions, for AWD remove the front stabilizer bar, release the steering spindle on the Rack and Pinions, for AWD lower the front subframe, for RWD disconnect electrical plugs and remove fasteners then remove the Rack and Pinions forward and down, for AWD disconnect electrical plugs and unclip the wiring harness from the front subframe and move it out of the way, for AWD release the Rack and Pinions fasteners and remove the Rack and Pinions by pulling the tie rod over the tension strut then slide the Rack and Pinions between subframe and body to remove; take care when removing the Rack and Pinions to avoid damaging the electrical connector; installation is the reverse of removal, make sure all threaded bores, bolts, nuts, splines and mating surfaces are clean, use new Rack and Pinions mounting bolts and tighten in two stages, replace steering spindle double universal joint pinch bolt(s), use new self-locking fasteners where applicable, rotate the steering wheel and verify the steering spindle and steering double universal joint do not contact the vehicle chassis or front subframe and if necessary loosen the Rack and Pinions and rotate it in the slotted holes for better clearance, after reassembling the steering and front suspension have the car professionally aligned and carry out the steering end stop teaching function using a BMW scan tool.
