    Q:
What are the differences in the harmonic balancer and pulley assembly on BMW Z4? Posted by Customer
    A:
Depending on the date of manufacture, models have a two-piece harmonic balancer and pulley, or a one-piece combination of the two. Should the pulley hub be removed from the engine, a new retaining bolt has to be applied during assembly on which torque wrench of 302 ft-lbs / 410 Nm is to be applied. Initially, you can then remove the engine splash shields, viscous cooling fan/electric cooling fan and fan cowl assembly and drivebelts. It should be understood that there can be two types of external appearance of the harmonic balancer/pulley and hub: bolted two-piece and integral one-piece. In case of two-piece assembly, remove the retaining bolts that secure the harmonic balancer/pulley to the hub and lock the hub if required. Remove the small nut on the hub using the right tools to avoid causing harm or incurring too much loss, then pull out the hub from the crankshaft; if it is tight, use a puller to do so. To assemble the components and to dismantle the one-piece assembly, the following procedures should be followed: Before trying to remove the central bolt of the hub, the hub must be immobilized with specified tools; the same method has to be applied while withdrawing the hub. If the pulley hub has been pulled out, then it may be necessary to fit a new oil seal in the lower timing chain cover. If a Woodruff key is used, replace it and position the groove in the pulley hub over the key and slide it onto the crankshaft, then replace the washer and a new hub bolt. Torque the holding tool to the pulley hub and the hub bolt to the specified value for the two-piece assembly and replace the harmonic balancer/pulley with proper engagement of the locating dowel. For the one-piece assembly, secure the hub and fasten the bolt to the recommended torque. Last but not least, reset drivebelts, viscous cooling fan and cowl, and engine splash shields if any.

    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the Harmonic Balancer in the M54 six cylinder engine on BMW X3? Posted by Customer
    A:
The M54 engine features a 1-piece crankshaft harmonic balancer integrated with the hub. Begin by raising the front of the vehicle and supporting it safely. From below, remove the front splash guard and the electric cooling fan along with the cowl, taking care to protect the radiator from damage using a piece of thin plywood. With the engine fully cooled, mark the direction of rotation on the engine accessory belts and remove them. Bolt BMW special tools 118190 and 118200 together, inserting the fingers of tool 118200 into the harmonic balancer openings to counter hold the harmonic balancer hub while loosening the mounting bolt. Ensure an assistant holds the special tool; if unavailable, rest the handle on the front subframe, protecting it with wood. Avoid using the flywheel locking tool to hold the crankshaft stationary during this process. Remove and discard the harmonic balancer mounting bolt, then pull off the harmonic balancer using tools 118210 and 118200. Inspect the front crankshaft seal for leaks, replacing it if necessary. When reinstalling, align the harmonic balancer groove with the crankshaft woodruff key and insert a new mounting bolt and washer. Inspect the woodruff key for damage before installing the harmonic balancer, replacing it if needed. Use tools 1118190 and 118200 to counterhold the harmonic balancer while tightening the mounting bolt, and refrain from using the flywheel locking tool for this task, opting instead for the recommended special tools or equivalent.

    Q:
How to safely remove and install the Harmonic Balancer in the N52 six cylinder engine on BMW X3? Posted by Customer
    A:
The crankshaft harmonic balancer or front pulley, as they're also called, must be done on a raised and safely supported vehicle. First, take out the front splash guard from below then, the electric cooling fan and cowl. To avoid shocks or blows on the radiator it is essential to put on the car a piece of plywood. As soon as the engine becomes ready and there is no danger of it overheating anymore, we should also note the direction of rotation of the engine accessory belt and then, take out this belt. Third, unbolt the harmonic balancer mounting torx bolts and then throw away the bolts and then lift off the harmonic balancer. There is special attention needed not to loosen the harmonic balancer hub bolt because, when done, the timing chain drive sprocket will rotate and this will lead to valve destruction. The process of installation is the general opposite of the process of removal.
