1975 BMW 2002 Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install Cylinder Head, valves, valve springs, rocker shafts, and camshaft on 1975 BMW 2002?
A: Install the first valve to its guide after applying engine oil to the valve stem. If the engine has covered 25,000 miles (40,000 km) on the original valve springs, renew them along with the valve stem oil seals on both inlet and exhaust valves. Install a spring lower cup, a valve stem oil seal, a spring, and the cap, then compress the spring and insert the split cotters. Remove the compressor and repeat the operations on the remaining seven valves, ensuring they are all returned to their original or ground-in locations if new valves are being installed. Drive the rocker shafts into their original locations, fitting the rocker arms and springs in their original positions as the shaft passes through. Ensure the rocker shafts are aligned to receive the cylinder head bolts into the shaft cut-outs, noting that the rear end of the inlet rocker shaft is open while the rear end of the exhaust rocker shaft must be closed, using a plug for this. Fit the rocker shaft cir clips. Install the distributor drive housing to the rear end of the cylinder head, taking care to include the special gasket between the distributor housing and the cylinder head, as well as the self-sealing washer under the bolt head located immediately below and to the left of the oil pressure switch. Release all pressure from the rocker arms using one of the methods. Oil the camshaft bearings and install the camshaft, but do not push it fully home until the thrust plate is fitted. Fit the camshaft thrust plate and securing bolts, and if the camshaft end float exceeds 0.0005 in (0.127 mm), renew the thrust plate.
