2002 BMW X5 Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install the right cylinder head in V8 engine on 2002 BMW X5?
A: To fit the correct cylinder head to the M62 TU engine undertake the following, Remove any gasket material from the cylinder head and the engine block sealing surfaces, avoid dropping debris into coolant or oil ways. Remove and scrub the cylinder head bolt holes and check the threads by brushing down the hole so as not to trap any liquid or debris in the hole as this is bad for the block. Do not scrape the aluminum components with metal edge scrappers or wire brushing; instead of this use hardened wooden or plastic scraper or abrasive discs to be fixed with the electric drill, carter to the type of the metal. Inspect the cylinder head locator sleeves for damage and deposit of sealant and put bead of 3-Bond 1209® or equivalent sealer to the joints on the timing chain cover. Install the new cylinder head gasket over the locating sleeves on the block; the OSEN or TOP marking should be up; then, turn the cylinder head back into its place. Recent the crankshaft rotate approximately 45° counter to the direction of the engine rotary to avoid the interference of the piston valves. Remove the old cylinder head bolts and washers, then replace them with the new ones used with the coating and installed without tightening, after that, tighten them properly and gradually in turns until they reach first stage torque limit values. Subsequent stages of tightening the bolts require the use of a torque angle gauge to tighten them to the required torque angle. Each camshaft should be rotated to the correct position with a 27mm open end gear wrench so that the marks will be uppermost and the camshaft locking tool set installed on the right cylinder head with a special BMW set bolt. Remove the timing chain under tension and turn the engine with the help of centre bolt on the vibration damper and keep the left bank camshafts locked. Engage the crankshaft at TDC and install the right VANOS unit, the intake and the exhaust camshaft sprockets and the secondary timing chain and the camshaft timing is set. Bend the oil supply lines and mounting nuts to the cylinder heads, also remove the upper timing chain covers, clean the gasket residue, and take off the inner and outer gaskets of the cylinder head covers and clean the grooves. Place the upper timing chain covers back onto the engine and replace the cylinder head covers with new gaskets and sealer, as shown in figure 11 at the corners of the half-moon cutouts. The rest of the removal sequence is as follows: in case of using some new gaskets, the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets should be new and the ignition coil ground straps should be connected to cylinders 2 & 7; the coolants should be refilled and bled; the engine oil and filter should be changed. It is also recommended that any ground wires disconnected during the procedure be replaced, in order not to short-circuit the electrical systems of the new engine; Also ensure that the crankshaft locking tool be withdrawn before the engine is started.
