2003 BMW X5 Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install the left cylinder head in V8 engine on 2003 BMW X5?
A: Thus, to fit the left cylinder head on the M62 TU engine first clean the gasket mating surface of the cylinder head and block from the debris with preferably no debris falling into the coolant or oil ways. Scrub the inside of the cylinder head bolts and check for any damage on the thread then ensure you remove any foreign substance or any liquid substance like oil or coolant trapped inside should harm the engine block. Do not use metal scraper or wire brushes on the aluminum part, instead; use a hard wooden or plastic scraper or abrasive discs with an electric drill; the type of the discs should be chosen according to the type of metal. Ensure the cleanliness of the cylinder head locator sleeves and paint thin beads of 3-Bond 1209® or such equivalent sealer on the seams of the timing chain cover. Place the new cylinder head gasket upon the locating sleeves on the block; make sure that the OBEN or TOP marking is on the top side. If the cylinder head has been machined after removal then a 0,3mm thicker head gasket has to be ordered from an authorised BMW dealer. Screw the cylinder head to the cylinder block while the crankshaft is rotated about 45° counter to the engine rotation from TDC preventing the valves to interfere with pistons. If new cylinder head bolts and washers have anti-seize on them, do not remove it at this time; temporarily tighten all cylinder head bolts finger tight and then gradually increase their torque in the proper sequence to the first stage torque values. In the next steps, tighten the bolts to the requisite torque angle using a torque angle gauge. Tighten the chain guide rail mounting bolt, rotate each camshaft to the correct position using 27 mm open-end wrench on the hexagonal camshaft casting as shown in the figure to the left, only if it is necessary, grind the outer edges of the wrench jaws in order not to damage the cylinder head. Follow that by rotating the camshafts until the marks are facing up, and fit the camshaft locking tool set on the left cylinder head such that the tools seat well on the surface. Secure the tools with an special BMW bolt which has to be inserted into the spark plug hole. Support the chain assembly and pull it horizontally with your hands while tightening the timing chain tension with the hydraulic fashion tool from the camshaft sprocket side; at the same time continue to turn the crank over to TDC position with the help of the center bolt of the vibration damper, making certain that the right bank camshafts are in the locked position. Lock the crankshaft at TDC with a special tool putting the left VANOS unit installing the intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets and the secondary timing chain putting their timing. The oil supply lines and mounting nuts should be connected to the cylinder heads and, with the help of clean cloth and solvent, the upper timing chain covers should be cleaned to get rid of the gasket residues; The inner and outer gaskets of the cylinder head covers should also be removed and cleaned. After that, it is necessary to fit the upper timing chain covers and fit the cylinder head covers with new gaskets and apply additional sealant at the four corners at the half moon cutout. The rest of the installation proceeds in the manner of the removal; new gaskets are used for the intake manifold and new gaskets, hangers, and bolts are used for the exhaust system, liberalism anti-seize paste to the bolts. They are as follows; reconnect the ignition coil ground straps to cylinder no 2 and 7, refilling the cooling system, replacing the engine oil and the filtering element. For the protection of engines electrical equipment reinstall all the wires that had been previously disconnected and also ensure the crankshaft locking tool has been withdrawn before starting the engine is started.
