2004 BMW X5 Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the cylinder head in six cylinder engine on 2004 BMW X5?
A: To remove the cylinder head from 6 cylinder engine remove the negative cable from the battery after reading the battery disconnection cautions. Next, remove the air intake hood above the radiator and the upper engine covers as well as the super charger. Disconnect the air hose and vacuum line which is located near the secondary air valve of the right side of the cylinder head. Depending on the position of the car, turn it off by inserting your fingers into the vent line from the cylinder head cover and pulling the clip, and the electrical harness connector from the VANOS solenoid valve. Both exhaust manifolds have to be pulled off and after that, the engine support arm and the engine mount can be reinstated, because the special tool for the engine support bracket is no longer required. Move to the removal of the air filter housing and ducts, the cylinder head cover, and then the spark plugs whilst endeavoured to plug the spark plug holes to avoid further influx of debris into the engine compartment. Those are: Pull out the intake manifold and block all the intake ports on the cylinder head to help minimize the possibility of contaminants getting into the engine. Lift the car slowly and remove the expansion tank cap and let the coolant drip into a pan that is placed underneath, also unscrew the coolant drain plug on the exhaust side of cylinder 2. Remove fully the plastic drain plug to drain the radiator into a pail. After that, take out the viscous-clutch cooling fan and the radiator, it is to be noted that the threads of the radiator fan mounting nut are left-threaded. Remove the electrical harness connector at the thermostat housing, employ the locks to release the hoses, and then remove the fasteners of the heater bypass tube, thus pulling, however leave the heater hose connected. If so you need to slightly unscrew the oil pressure line banjo bolt and gently push the oil line aside and then unscrew and take off the thermostat housing. Take off the oil baffle cover on the intake camshaft and unbolt a banjo on the VANOS unit oil pressure line; this should be done to fit a special tool for compressed air to the VANOS unit Then be ready to catch any dripping oil. This is done with the engine at idle; cover the oil bore in the VANOS unit with a shop towel to catch the oil spray when blasting compressed air set to 2 - 8 bar. In this place the compressed air line connect and by the crank shaft vibration damper bolt rotate the engine in clockwise direction until cylinder 1 intake and exhaust camshaft lobes are in position as in the case of TDC. Do not rotate the engine counterclockwise to get to TDC If it goes past TDC, rotate it four times. Take out the sealing plug on the special tool bore on lower left side of the engine block adjacent to the fly-wheel to lock the crankshaft at TDC position with the tool. Loosen and take out the two cylinder head cover studs provided at the rear of the cylinder head and then lock the camshafts in their TDC positions using a camshaft lock tool set. Loosen the VANOS unit from the front of the cylinder head, suspend the primary chain while maintaining the tension and rotate the engine about 30 degrees anti-clockwise to avoid interference during camshaft machining. Take out the camshaft locking tools from the rear of the Cylinder head, then camshafts and camshaft bearing carriers. Take out the intake camshaft sensor from the side of the cylinder head, the secondary chain lower guide bolts and the chain guide. Let the bolts that fix the timing chain cover onto the cylinder head be undone. Employing a suitable tool, turn the cylinder head bolts gradually in several turns in the sequence as prescribed and replace the head bolts. Last of all remove the cylinder head as you reach the last stage of the process.
