Direct injection refers to the fact that XS engines have a multipoint electronic fuel injection, and are equipped with a distributorless ignition system with one coil for each cylinder. These coils are individual with control and feedback from the ECM, whereas power is provided through the unloader relay that intends close when the IGN is switched 'ON' to apply voltage to the coils, which are switched on at the negative end by the ECM. The ignition timing is electronically mapped and cannot be physically adjusted The ECM, controls the timing by using data such as the engine load, engine speed, coolant temperature, knock sensor data, and intake air temperature. A 3 D map is stored in the ECM whereby, during cranking the crank shaft signal sets the initial ignition and then depending with the operating conditions of the engine the ECM adjusts the timing of ignition accordingly.
