  A: Crankshaft rear main seal replacement involves removing the transmission and flywheel. Before starting the procedure, it is important to read the entire process. For manual transmission vehicles, the clutch pressure plate and disc need to be removed. The engine oil should be drained. The seal has six removal openings, and if necessary, the rubber coating should be scraped off to expose them. A BMW seal puller is used to remove the seal by inserting sheet metal screws into the removal openings and slowly screwing in the seal remover spindle. The special tools and spacer ring are then removed. The seal grooves and crankcase seams should be coated with Loctite® 171000 primer using a brush. An injector kit is used to fill the seal grooves and crankshaft seams with Loctite® 128357 sealant. The sealed areas should be coated with Loctite® 171000 primer to bind the sealant. The remainder of the assembly is the reverse of the disassembly, including installing the flywheel, clutch or torque converter, and transmission. The engine should be filled with oil and then run to check for leaks.
