- Q: How to replace a rear CV boot on a 2006 BMW X3?A: When replacing a CV joint boot, use a complete CV joint boot repair kit that includes a new boot, clamping bands, special lubricant, and a new inner CV joint circlip. To replace the outer CV boot, first remove the inner joint and boot, then remove the axle shaft. While working with the axle shaft on a bench, cut off the old boot clamps and remove the boot, cleaning off old grease from the joint and shaft. Remove the dust cover from the CV joint and take off the circlip that retains the joint inner hub to the axle shaft, then press off the joint cap. Support the inner hub with a special tool and press the axle shaft out of the joint. Clean all old lubricant off the shaft splines and inner joint splines, inspecting for damage and replacing the joint if heavy wear is present. If disassembling the CV joint, match mark the inner and outer race and intermediate ball cage for reassembly. Slide the CV joint boot onto the axle shaft and apply a heavy-duty locking compound to the drive axle splines, positioning the new CV joint on the shaft with the raised side of the hub facing the shaft. Avoid letting the locking compound contact the balls in the joint, applying only a thin coat to cover the splines. While supporting the axle shaft, press the inner hub of the CV joint onto the shaft and install a new circlip, followed by new boot clamps. Use sealing gel to seal the dust cover to the CV joint before reinstallation. Ensure the ball hub does not pivot too far in the outer ring of the joint to prevent the balls from falling out. Before installing each small boot clamp, "burp" the boot by flexing the CV joint, using a small screwdriver inserted between the boot and the axle shaft to assist. Finally, install the axle shaft.
