  To the left side of the engine block is attached alternator that is driven by engine accessory belt. An idler pulley for belt also connects at bottom of alternator case. Several models of various kind of alternators are used in E90 cars; therefore, when selecting a replacement, it is crucial to ensure that it is compatible with the car model. Alternator connection to ECM done via Bit-Serial Data (BSD) line. Through this single-wire connection, the ECM can adapt its computations and control data for varying alternator outputs. The nominal voltage value to set up on the voltage regulator by ECM, activating and deactivating an alternator, controlling load response of an alternator, checking BSD line continuity, storing fault codes related to an alternator and finally switching a charging indicator light on or off on our instrument cluster are all functions over which the ECM has control over.
