Disconnect the front silencer from the exhaust downpipe, then unscrew and remove the bolts securing the flexible coupling to the transmission unit output flange while supporting the front end of the drive shaft. Next, unscrew and remove the bolts securing the drive shaft rear flange to the pinion drive flange, supporting the rear end of the drive shaft. Remove the two bolts from the drive shaft centre bearing, then lower and remove the entire shaft. For installation, reverse the removal process while ensuring to hold the bolt heads on the flexible coupling steady during nut tightening to prevent distortion, use new lock nuts on the rear flange bolts, preload the centre bearing by pushing the support arms towards the front of the car by 0.08 in. (2.0 mm) before tightening the securing bolts, and leave the threaded ring on drive shafts with a sliding section loose until the shaft is installed and then tighten fully. To check the alignment of the two sections of the drive shaft, use a straight-edge and small blocks, as any misalignment can cause vibration or drumming during operation, which can be corrected by inserting shims under the bearing support arms.
