BMW 2002 Oil Pump

The BMW 2002 Oil Pump performs a critical function by routing oil from the sump through the filters and galleries to keep vital engine parts lubricated and cool. This is perhaps even more important for the lively four cylinder that resides in every 2002 variant. The Oil Pump gets its spin, direct or indirect, from the crankshaft. There are three main types of drives: direct, gear, and chain. Each one uses gears to draw the oil through the pickup screen and on under pressure to the bearings, the pistons, and the camshaft. The crank nose is surrounded by the direct drive for compact simplicity, while gear and chain drive units sit beside the crank, dependent on an external gear set or a sprocket chain. While the extra parts add inspection points, they ease replacement. Every style has an internal pressure relief valve that opens up to reduce overload pressure and a pickup tube that must be free of debris. When overhauling, the Oil Pump housing and gear clearance must meet spec to ensure pressure build up after every start. Owners of restored BMW models note that a stock Oil Pump will do for street driving in many cases, provided engine tolerances are factory. The Oil Pump's health and BMW 2002 longevity are due to frequent checking of clearances, drive gears, and the relief valve.

BMW 2002 Oil Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove the oil pump, sprocket, and related seals on BMW 2002?
    Posted by Marie V.
    A:
Remove the sump, then flatten the tabs of the lock washers and unscrew the oil pump sprocket bolts to extract the sprocket from the loop of the driving chain. Withdraw the oil pump after extracting the pump and pick-up lube securing bolts, which are screwed into the no. 3 main bearing cap. Take note of the 'O' ring seal around the pressure relief pipe and the special seal at the pipe to crankcase flange.
