Before beginning work, drain the engine oil if it's already inside, and remove the stabilizer bar if your car is from 2002. Lift the engine with a hoist to balance its weight while freeing up the engine mountings. Toe the

Piston tops its highest position. Pull out one of the sump bolts at a time, spacing them equal distances apart in a symmetrical layout. Start where diagonally opposite bolts on the sump are closest together. Take one bolt off, then turn to the other side. When the sump won't come off, don't pry it; use a sharp knife to cut the gasket around it. Don't force off the sump; separate the oil pan from the engine block, then pull it toward the front as you take it apart to go around the oil pump pipe.
