BMW 2002 Voltage Regulator

The BMW 2002 Voltage Regulator protects the wiring of the car and the battery from becoming overcharged, which can cause sizzling, or undercharged, which can cause draining, by maintaining alternator output within a healthy range. This Voltage Regulator is constantly monitoring system demand. It instantly opens or closes its internal circuit so that the alternator can feed roughly 13 to 14.5 volts at cruising speed, no matter how engine revs or auxiliary loads swing wildly. When the engine is at rest, the device allows the battery to sit just over 12 volts. If readings move toward 15 volts during engine operation, the Voltage Regulator has failed and immediate attention is needed to prevent battery boil-over, which can spill acid on paint and metal. Early and late 2002 models have the same operating principle; therefore, only one main style is discussed. Owners need not worry about which voltage check they are performing and only need to focus on voltage without having to worry about the different designs. A functioning Voltage Regulator extends the life of the battery, protects radios, lights, and gauges, and makes each BMW 2002 trip free from flickering headlights or melted wiring, proving small electronics make a big difference. The Voltage Regulator is therefore a modest yet critical guardian in the electrical network of any classic BMW.

BMW 2002 Voltage Regulator Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to disconnect and replace a faulty voltage regulator on BMW 2002?
    Posted by Cal D.
    A:
Disconnect the lead from the battery negative terminal, then disconnect the leads from the top terminals of the voltage regulator located on the bulkhead within the engine compartment, ensuring to identify the leads for exact replacement to their original terminals. Unbolt the regulator and lift it far enough to disconnect the leads from its lower terminals. If the regulator unit is faulty, which can be tested by an auto-electrical company, renew it with one of the same type. Refitting is a reversal of removal.
