Remove the worn brushes by unsoldering their leads, and install the new brushes, ensuring to resolder their leads without allowing solder to flow down the braided copper wire; solder only the tip of the lead while minimizing the heat from the soldering iron. Push the brushes into their holders and position the brush springs to retain the brushes securely. Clean the slip rings with a fuel-moistened cloth, then reassemble the alternator, ensuring the wave washer is located on the front of the rotor shaft bearing and the diode carrier is positioned towards the top. Finally, release the brush springs so that the brushes make contact with the slip rings, which can be achieved by inserting a probe into the multi-pin socket of the alternator.
