How to remove and install the ignition switch on the BMW 325i?

The covered models use a coded fob instead of a traditional metal key. Inserting the fob into the switch allows the use of the engine start/stop switch, which actually starts the engine. Carefully pry off the switch trim, remove the mounting bolts and pull the switch from the instrument panel. Disconnect the electrical connector as the switch is withdrawn. Installation is the reverse of removal. For E-series chassis models, using a blunt, fiat-bladed tool, carefully pry the decorative trim strip/air vents from the instrument panel. Disconnect any electrical connectors as the trim is removed. Squeeze together the clips and push the engine start/stop switch from the trim. Installation is the reverse of removal. For F-series chassis models, using a trim tool, pry out the switch from the instrument panel, then disconnect the electrical connector. Installation is the reverse of removal.

BMW 325i Ignition Switch

The BMW 325i Ignition Switch is the starting point from which battery power is distributed to the starter, engine systems and components to allow the driver to wake the car up with a turn of the key. On early models of the BMW 325i, the column-mounted Ignition Switch would only operate after the correct key slid into the lock cylinder and was rotated through the ACC, ON and START positions, which would route current to components, engine electronics or the starter. Government theft rules drove BMW to the use of steering column lockouts, and by the late 1980s, a coded key system was introduced to the point that even if the lock was forced, the Ignition Switch would not make the engine fire up without the corresponding chip. Wear or vibration can still cause contact loss inside the Ignition Switch which stalls the motor or leaves lights dead, which is why owners may need replacement units built to original specs. Recent 325i generations take out the turn action and replace it with a dash push button with a pocket fob, a combination that simplifies the components, reduces the build cost and allows the computer to authorize starts when the brake is pressed. Though the interface may differ, all BMW 325is are still dependent on their Ignition Switch to allow the drive to stay alive.
