How to remove and replace battery cables on BMW 328i?

When removing the cables, always disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal first and hook it up last, or you might accidentally short out the battery with the tool you're using to loosen the cable clamps. Even if you're only replacing the cable for the positive terminal, be sure to disconnect the negative cable from the battery first. Disconnect the old cables from the battery, then trace each of them to their opposite ends and disconnect them. Be sure to note the routing of each cable before disconnecting it to ensure correct installation. If you are replacing any of the old cables, take them with you when buying new cables. It is vitally important that you replace the cables with identical parts. Clean the threads of the solenoid or ground connection with a wire brush to remove rust and corrosion. Apply a light coat of battery terminal corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly to the threads to prevent future corrosion. Attach the cable to the solenoid or ground connection and tighten the mounting nut/bolt securely. Before connecting a new cable to the battery, make sure that it reaches the battery post without having to be stretched. Installation is the reverse of removal. Connect the positive cable first, then the negative cable.

The BMW 328i Battery Cable provides the electrical charge necessary to activate the starter and power all in-car electronics. All 328i vehicles contain a matched set of thick copper conductors, one positive Battery Cable and one negative Battery Cable. Forming a closed loop that carries electrical current away from and back to the battery, this system guarantees reliable cranking and lighting. With the passage of time, the copper strands of a wire lose conductivity due to heat, vibration, and moisture. Similarly, the rubber jacket of the wire splits and the wire ends corrode. Thus, a high-resistance choke point gets created. This was once a free-flowing wire. As a result, the car does not make any noise at the key turn. The failure of the Battery Cable can cause the delivery of low amperage, making the dash lights flicker but not starting an engine. While early BMW 328i models and later trims share the same overarching layout design, there are actually two functional styles.
