Working on the left side of the engine compartment, start by removing the brake fluid reservoir cover. Use the BMW special tool 13 3 010 or an equivalent hose clamping tool to pinch off the brake reservoir to clutch master cylinder supply hose. Next, raise the vehicle and support it safely. Remove the lower engine and transmission splash shields if necessary. For models with a metal slave cylinder, work underneath the transmission and disconnect the fluid line from the slave cylinder on the side of the transmission. Place a pan under the hose to catch any dripping fluid. Remove the slave cylinder mounting nuts from the clutch bellhousing and remove the cylinder. For models with a plastic slave cylinder, remove the slave cylinder mounting nuts from the clutch bellhousing and remove the cylinder. Again, work underneath the transmission, release the retaining clip, and remove the hydraulic line. Place a pan under the hose to catch any dripping fluid. To reinstall, press the cylinder piston in by hand and reconnect the hydraulic line with the cylinder fully depressed. At the brake fluid reservoir, remove the hose clamp tool from the hydraulic line. Hold the cylinder with the piston facing down and press the piston into the cylinder five times. For all models, the remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal. Check for wear on the slave cylinder, except on the tip, which may be caused by misalignment of clutch components. Lightly coat the pushrod tip with molybdenum disulfide grease (Molykote® Longterm or equivalent). During installation, ensure that the pushrod tip engages the recess in the clutch release lever and that the spacer (if equipped) between the fuel line and hydraulic line remains in the installed position. Finally, fill the brake fluid reservoir with clean fluid and bleed the clutch hydraulics.
