BMW 335i Release Bearing

The BMW 335i Release Bearing allows the driver to disconnect engine torque to the gearbox the moment the clutch pedal is depressed. This enables shifts to be made crisply and without shudder. Mounted on the clutch housing, this Release Bearing slides over a hollow shaft and presses the pressure plate springs each time hydraulic or cable force slides the clutch fork. After the pedal lifts, the Release Bearing retreats and the power flow is restored. The coupe whips off without slip. Earlier cars applied a cable actuated Release Bearing in conjunction with a mechanical fork, but the recent models of the BMW 335i use a sealed hydraulic Release Bearing which self centers and delivers a lighter pedal. The difference is in how it is actuated, rather than how it handles the load. Typical failure clues are rattling while pressing the pedal, vibration or a stiff feel, and grinding during shifts. The drivers of the 335i are advised to get to work fast, ensuring BMW longevity by promptly replacing the part to avoid collateral clutch damage and keep the coupe happily rowing through its six-speed gate.

BMW 335i Release Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to inspect and replace the clutch disc, flywheel and release bearing on BMW 335i?
    Posted by Gregory K.
    A:
Inspect the clutch disc for wear, cracks, loose rivets, contamination or excessive runout (warping). Replace if necessary. Measure the depth of the clutch lining at lining rivets, if the shallowest rivet depth is less than 1 mm (0.04 in), replace the clutch disk. Inspect the flywheel for scoring, hotspots, cracks or loose or worn guide pins. Replace the flywheel if any faults are found. If the flywheel is removed from the engine, install using new bolts. Check to make sure the transmission Pilot Bearing rotates smoothly without play. Replace if faulty. Inspect and clean the release bearing module. Check the release bearing ball stud and spring retainer. Replace if damaged or worn. Clean the release bearing guide sleeve. Do not grease the release bearing module or guide sleeve. If the guide sleeve is greased, the release bearing may stick to it.
