When draining the fuel tank, use a safe storage unit and an approved
Fuel Pumping device. Start the engine and allow it to run for 10 to 15 seconds to fill the fuel compensating siphon assembly, enabling both lobes of the fuel tank to be drawn off through the fuel filler pipe. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, and remove the fuel tank filler cap. Slide the suction hose into the filler neck about 130 cm (51 in), twisting as necessary, and withdraw fuel into the storage unit. Monitor the fuel level reduction in both lobes by removing the rear seat cushion to access both fuel tank sender harness connectors. Use a multimeter to measure resistance at both senders, noting that resistance should drop as the fuel level decreases. If the siphoning mechanism is faulty, drain the left tank lobe separately by removing the sender cover and pumping fuel directly out of the left lobe. Carefully remove the suction hose from the tank filler neck to avoid damaging the filler neck baffle plate. After completing repairs but before starting the engine, ensure there is at least 5 liters (1.5 gallons) of fuel in the tank, as running the fuel pump without fuel can cause damage.
