BMW 335i Harmonic Balancer

The BMW 335i Harmonic Balancer is responsible for the control of the vibrations from the crankshaft to keep the engine running smoothly. This Harmonic Balancer is mounted on the crankshaft snout via a metal hub and has an inertia ring surrounding it, which is separated from the hub by a layer of rubber. As the crankshaft twists during combustion, the rubber flexes to allow the inertia ring to counteract torsional distortion and reduce the forces that can damage the crankshaft. The BMW 335i Harmonic Balancer has V-grooves on the edge that accommodate the auxiliary drive belt to rotate without an addition of pulleys. Thus, this component also serves to absorb the vibration and transmit the power. Some versions include additional weights that work with crankshaft counterweights to counteract the mass of the pistons and connecting rods to further balance rotating assemblies. These characteristics are integral to the same overall design and do not define a different style. When the rubber wears out due to heat, oil, or road salt, the Harmonic Balancer loses its flexibility and vibration increases, which can cause a failure of the crankshaft. This is why it is important for every BMW 335i driver who wants continued reliability from the engine and the rest of the BMW 335i drivetrain to ensure a timely Harmonic Balancer replacement.

BMW 335i Harmonic Balancer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove and install the harmonic balancer on the N55 six-cylinder engine in a BMW 335i?
    Posted by Kimberly K.
    A:
The harmonic balancer, also known as the front pulley, requires the removal of the engine compartment splash shield and the engine accessory belt. For manual transmission, mount BMW special tool 11 8 180 on the transmission using bolts A, then slide the lock handle up and tighten bolt B. For automatic transmission, secure the flywheel with BMW special tool 11 8 660 through the transmission bell housing opening. After removing fasteners (1 to 8), the harmonic balancer can be taken out. It is crucial not to remove the harmonic balancer hub bolt, as doing so allows the timing chain drive sprocket to rotate freely, which can lead to valve damage. Installation follows the reverse order of removal.
