The BMW 335i Occupant Detection Sensor decides whether or not the passenger airbag deploys if the car experiences a crash. This is to ensure that there is no needless deployment of the device while also protecting all the occupants inside the car. Within BMW safety architecture, this new Occupant Detection Sensor connects via the same wire harness that provides airbag cushion, inflation module, crash sensors, diagnostic monitoring unit, steering wheel coil, indicator lamp, and battery feed. The airbag circuit draws on a tiny reserve charge at every ignition, commencing a rapid self-check during which the Occupant Detection Sensor checks its circuits. The dash airbag light glows briefly to show that everything, including the sensor, is okay. When the Occupant Detection Sensor identifies an occupant with a weight matching an occupant, it leaves the passenger airbag armed. When there is no occupant, it keeps that module inactive so that smaller items, like your handbag or your dog, will not trigger deployment and the expensive airbag repairs following a minor impact. - Q:How to replace the occupant detection sensor on the front passenger seat of a BMW 335i?Posted by Rachel L.A:Vehicles equipped with an occupant detection sensor in the seat bottom utilize this device as part of a two-stage deployment airbag system. The 3 Series models feature an OC3 mat integrated into the seat cushion, which is replaced as a unit. To access the occupant detection sensor, first disable the detection mat from the restraint control module using a BMW factory scan tool or equivalent. Next, remove the passenger seat, followed by the seat control switches. Detach the fastener and seat cover clip panel, then remove the trim panel by prying the clip out of the seat cover on the right side. Unhook the seat bottom upholstery at the rear and pull it away from the seat frame, with assistance pushing down on the seat bottom cushion to facilitate this process. Completely pull out the cover welt from the seat frame and move the seat cover with cushion in the indicated direction, carefully feeding the bracing cloth through the gap in the backrest. Disconnect the harness connector for the occupant detection sensor and seat heating if applicable, then remove the seat cushion while detaching wire retainers.
