BMW 335i Vapor Canister

The BMW 335i's Vapor Canister captures gasoline vapors to burn them instead of venting them, reducing pollution and fuel smell. This Vapor Canister is packed with activated charcoal that stores hydrocarbons from the sealed fuel tank until engine vacuum opens the purge path. As the air flows through the charcoal, the vapor takes the path to the intake manifold and is mixed with the normal air fuel mix. The early 335i cars applied a simple charcoal canister with a pressure relief cap. Later 335i models received an on-board diagnostics friendly Vapor Canister style that adds a vent solenoid and tank pressure sensor. With this, the engine computer of modern BMW engines can run leak tests and trigger a dashboard warning if the vacuum does not hold. Even with those electronic extras, every BMW Vapor Canister works the same way. Porous carbon adsorbs fuel vapor, while timed purge cycles help it clear out. The Vapor Canister can usually go for a long time without any sort of services aside from verifying that the hoses are clear and that cracks aren't causing a raw fuel smell. As long as it continues working, your BMW 335i won't have emissions problems.

BMW 335i Vapor Canister Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
Where is the Vapor Canister located and how to remove and install it on BMW 335i?
    Posted by Edward J.
    A:
The carbon canister is designed on the left hand side under the rear bumper. To start it is advisable to lift the rear end of the car, and ensure that it is well secured. It is important to always have stability and support as using a floor jack does not sufficient support; the use of a professional automotive lift or jack stands is recommended. Then, unbolster all the fasteners for left side rear bumper splash shield. To remove the activated carbon canister it is required to unbolt the leakage detection pump connections and remove the electrical connector harness and the fastener to pull the carbon canister out of the car. The procedure of installation is the complete reverse of the removal process that has been described above.
