Drain the
Fuel Tank and disconnect the negative cable from the battery, ensuring to read the battery disconnection cautions beforehand. Remove the fuel sensor access cover and then take out the left side Fuel Level Sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the gray ring toward the sensor and pulling the fuel supply line straight out. Use special tool 16 1 020 to remove the fuel pump service cap. Attach stiff wire to the hose pack through the right side fuel tank opening, pulling it through to the left side to aid installation. To remove the assembly, press the tab against the spring force and carefully lift the Fuel Level Sensor out of the tank with the hose pack, remembering to replace the fuel tank seals (O-rings). For installation, carefully feed the hose pack through the tank with the mechanics wire and guide the Fuel Level Sensor into position, ensuring that the service cap lug engages with the corresponding slot of the fuel tank. Install the service cap hand tight and use BMW special tool 16 1 020 to tighten it until the marking on the service cap points to the notch on the fuel tank. Connect the electrical connector and fuel line, then install the fuel tank access cover. After completing the repairs, ensure there is at least 5 liters (1.5 gallons) of fuel in the tank before starting the engine, as running the fuel pump without fuel can cause damage.
