The BMW 335i's Fuel Level Sensor provides continuous updates of the tank volume to the gauge on the dashboard. This serves as a warning that prevents the driver from being caught off guard when their tank runs empty. The sensor is in the fuel tank where a buoyant float rises and falls with the gasoline level. This motion causes an actuating rod to move against a variable resistor and produce a voltage. The cluster indicator uses the voltage in its calculations. In early 335i versions, the Fuel Level Sensor operated on a simple float and resistor circuit. However, after BMW upgraded its sensor system, the same mechanical design was retained, but electronics were updated. The new circuit provided a quicker response, higher heat tolerance, lower power draw, and better accuracy calibration. Due to this update, the gauge reading settles rapidly after refilling instead of lingering at full. Regardless of trim, all BMW 335i variants are equipped with paired left and right tank units that balance out the saddle-shaped tank and send averaged data to the gauge. Each Fuel Level Sensor assembly runs continuously. Warning lamps caused by the Fuel Level Sensor provide timely trips to the pump. A faulty Fuel Level Sensor often shows erratic or frozen readings that should be checked across the entire 335i lineup.

- Q:How to drain the fuel tank and disconnect the battery for Fuel Level Sensor removal on BMW 335i?Posted by Nate K.A:Drain the Fuel Tank and disconnect the negative cable from the battery, ensuring to read the battery disconnection cautions beforehand. Remove the fuel sensor access cover and then take out the left side Fuel Level Sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the gray ring toward the sensor and pulling the fuel supply line straight out. Use special tool 16 1 020 to remove the fuel pump service cap. Attach stiff wire to the hose pack through the right side fuel tank opening, pulling it through to the left side to aid installation. To remove the assembly, press the tab against the spring force and carefully lift the Fuel Level Sensor out of the tank with the hose pack, remembering to replace the fuel tank seals (O-rings). For installation, carefully feed the hose pack through the tank with the mechanics wire and guide the Fuel Level Sensor into position, ensuring that the service cap lug engages with the corresponding slot of the fuel tank. Install the service cap hand tight and use BMW special tool 16 1 020 to tighten it until the marking on the service cap points to the notch on the fuel tank. Connect the electrical connector and fuel line, then install the fuel tank access cover.
