What are some important considerations when working with the battery cables on BMW M3?

The positive battery cable for all E36 models is quite long, goes to the battery in the trunk and then the jump post on the right front side of the engine compartment. The top and front cover of the e36 positive jump post box can be removed to check connection of positive battery cable but before this, negative battery cable must be disconnected first. Whenever working with any electrical component(s) of vehicle it is always wise to disconnect the negative (-) battery cable so as to prevent any possible damage that might occur to sensitive components as Powertrain Control Module (PCM), radio, alternator etc. It is always advisable to remove or disconnect first a negative (-) battery terminal when removing or disconnecting battery cables because accidentally grounding positive (+) terminal to vehicle body would damage above-stated parts. Before disconnection of cables, turn off ignition switch at OFF position in order to avoid drawing current from arcing which could damage alternator diodes among other things. When installing a new or reconnecting an old battery connect safely by attaching only the negative cable as lastly done while installing back tool or component slip over putting for safety against misplacing on it and being hit by positive electrode cable again. No harm will happen if a chassis ground and one of these touch terminals at once since with no time such connections are made without even connecting negative part of battery itself. Before tying up negative part of link ensure that positive part has been fully installed and tightened.
