BMW M3 Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor

The Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor on the BMW M3 monitors the temperature of incoming air, allowing the engine computer to adjust fuel delivery for cleaner power and a more stable idle. Situated adjacent to the mass air flow device, the Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor transmits information to the Powertrain Control Module that combines air volume data to determine injector-on time, preventing the mixture from going rich or lean. When the sensing element is fouled, the signal is distorted. Symptoms are similar to those of a bad air flow meter, such as hesitation, stalling, and check engine light, because the module cannot balance the ratio when unmeasured air leaks past the measurement point. Between E30, E46, and later F80, only packaging updates took place. The design of the thermistor didn't change, so drivers always enjoy the same great and quick warm-up feedback. In contrast to the older VAF meter door, which was spring-loaded, the Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor applied today does not have any moving parts, which reduces the chances of sticking. This device still needs a clean intake pathway, though. A regular inspection of the hoses for leaks protects the BMW M3 Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor and the signature BMW throttle response wanted by every M3 owner. The Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor is crucial for optimal engine performance.

BMW M3 Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
What is the role of the Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor and How to test on BMW M3?
    Posted by Susana F.
    A:
The Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor (IAT) sensor, an NTC type sensor, measures incoming air temperature. The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses it to adjust fuel injection and ignition timing. The sensor's location varies with engine type. A BMW service tester or Data Scan Tool (DST) can test the sensor. For engines with a vane type Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, the Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor is in the MAF housing. Check for a 5 volt signal between terminal No.1 and ground. If absent, check for an open circuit. Check resistance between terminals Nos. 2 and 3, which should change with temperature. For 1996-98 models, the Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor is separate, located in the intake manifold or upper air filter housing. Check for a 5 volt signal between the reference signal connector and ground. If absent, check for an open circuit. Check resistance between the IAT terminals, which should decrease as air temperature increases. Follow specific procedures to remove and install the sensor.
