The Intake Manifold Temperature (IMT) sensor is an NTC type sensor that measures the temperature of the incoming air. It is used by the Engine Control Module (ECM) to adjust fuel injection and ignition timing. The location of the sensor varies depending on the engine type. To test the sensor, a BMW service tester or suitable Data Scan Tool (DST) can be used, or the following steps can be followed. For engines with a vane type Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, the IMT sensor is inside the MAF housing. Carefully pull back the rubber boot on the MAF sensor electrical connector and check for a 5 volt signal between terminal No.1 and ground. If voltage is not present, check the wiring for an open circuit. Detach the MAF sensor electrical connector and check the resistance between terminals Nos. 2 and 3. The resistance should change as the temperature changes. For 1996-98 models, the IMT sensor is a separate sensor located either in the intake manifold or the upper air filter housing. Carefully unplug the IMT sensor electrical connector and check for a 5 volt signal between the reference signal electrical connector and ground. If voltage is not present, check the wiring for an open circuit. Check the resistance between the two IMT terminals. The resistance should decrease rapidly as the air temperature increases. To remove and install the sensor, follow the specific procedures for each engine type.
