Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column, and instrument panel, disable the SRS. For E3D Models: If equipped, disarm the SRS and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the steering wheel, the trim panel at the bottom left of the instrument panel, and the lower steering column casing. Remove the screws holding the switch, take out the switch, and disconnect the plug. When installing, position the switch back, ensuring the ground wire is connected and the retainers fit into their respective holes, reconnect the plug, replace the trim panels and steering wheel, and reconnect the negative battery terminal. For E36 Models: If equipped, disarm the SRS and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Take off the lower dashboard trim panel on the left and the lower section of the steering column casing. Remove the steering wheel, then remove the screw and compress the clip to release the switch, followed by disconnecting the plug. To install, reposition the switch and reconnect the plug, put back the steering wheel and trim panels, and reconnect the negative battery cable, making sure to arm the SRS afterward.
